Everyday Adventure 100

December, 26, 2017

Two years ago, I and Lotta decided to make 50 everyday adventures. The inspiration came from an interview in the Husky podcast with Louise Östberg who made 365 adventures in a year, and from Micael Dalén’s book, Kaosology, where he talks about the life blur, the days one doesn’t remember, where everyday life just blends together.

We agreed that 50 adventures in a year was a good amount for us. The criteria we set were that we would do them together, it would feel a bit new for us or someone who came with us, and it would be simple adventures but somewhat exciting or challenging to carry out. At first, it was a bit difficult to come up with new things that felt new and fun, but after a while, we found the right level. Actually, it wasn’t a big change because we’ve always been outdoors a lot and exercised in nature since we met 30 years ago. Back then, we mainly did windsurfing, downhill skiing, hiking, road cycling on everyday bikes and paddling in canoes, plus a lot of indoor strength training. Over the last 10 years, our joint activities have evolved into trail running, open water swimming, swimrun, MTB, road cycling, cross-country skiing, kayaking, SUP, surfski, freediving, etc., while indoor training is just a small complement. The difference with the everyday adventures was that we had to start thinking that we would take us more to new places or combine activities in a new way. We quickly noticed that we felt good from our joint project, that it was inspiring to plan together, and that we were more engaged in getting out into nature together. The variation and having an adventure diary on the website made life a little more golden with more memorable moments and less of a life blur. Above all, it gave an increased sense of belonging that has felt invaluable for a middle-aged couple with grown children. After one year, we really did not want to end the project and quickly decided to continue for another year with 50 new adventures. Now it feels like it has become a fun habit that we believe we can continue with without having to make it a project, or we will find something else.

We had decided to celebrate our hundredth everyday adventure with some bubbles at a fun place. Since it became minus degrees again after a few days of thaw, and it would snow on Boxing Day, we thought it would be cozy to hike up a mountain and experience winter in the great forest. Also, mountain hiking is a favorite activity. We chose Järvsöklack as a comfortable day trip, about 2 hours by car from home. I had been there before and knew it was beautiful, but then I cycled there in the summer. Winter is a different experience and Lotta had not been there.

We packed our day trip backpacks with food, coffee and sparkling wine and drove towards Järvsö in the snow weather in the morning. On the small roads up to the mountain from Järvsö, a guy drove off the road in the intense snowstorm. We stopped and helped him and eventually managed to tow him back onto the road. It’s just a small adventure to get a car out of a ditch from a narrow, winding, poorly plowed road, where other traffic also comes. After we finished the rescue and the ditch-driver thanked us for our help, we continued on the small roads.
